The Best Time of Year to Get Married in Málaga and the Costa del Sol
If you are planning a destination wedding in Spain, one of the first decisions you will need to make is when to get married.
For many international couples, Málaga and the Costa del Sol are an obvious choice because of the sunshine, beautiful venues and Mediterranean lifestyle.
But choosing the right month can make a huge difference to your wedding.
Temperature, sunset time, venue availability, guest comfort, pricing and even the style of celebration you want can all be affected by the season.
As destination wedding planners based in Málaga, we work with couples from the UK and overseas who are often trying to decide between spring, summer and autumn.
So, when is the best time to get married in Málaga?
For most couples, we would say May, June, September and early October are some of the strongest months.
But that does not mean they are right for everyone.
The best month for your wedding depends on the experience you want to create.
What Is the Wedding Season in Málaga?
The main wedding season on the Costa del Sol generally runs from April to October.
During these months, couples can make the most of outdoor ceremonies, cocktail receptions, dinners under the stars and long evenings.
Spring and autumn are particularly popular because the weather is warm without usually being as intense as the height of summer.
July and August can also be beautiful, especially for evening weddings, but the temperatures need to be considered carefully.
Winter weddings are less common, but they can work extremely well for smaller celebrations, city weddings and venues with beautiful indoor spaces.
Getting Married in April
April marks the beginning of the main wedding season in Málaga.
The landscape is usually greener after the winter months, flowers are blooming and temperatures are generally comfortable.
It can be a beautiful month for couples who want a spring wedding without the stronger heat that arrives later in the season.
Why we like April
You can usually plan an outdoor ceremony without worrying about extreme temperatures.
Guests can enjoy the daytime comfortably.
Countryside venues can look particularly beautiful at this time of year.
There can sometimes be more availability than in peak months such as May, June and September.
What to consider
April weather can be less predictable than later in the season.
Rain is still possible, so having a good Plan B is important.
Evenings can also feel cooler, particularly at countryside venues or locations at higher elevations.
If you are planning dinner outdoors, heaters or an indoor alternative may be worth considering.
Getting Married in May
May is one of our favourite months for weddings in Málaga.
The weather is normally warm, but not usually at the intense levels of July or August.
This means you can comfortably have a ceremony in the afternoon followed by an outdoor cocktail and dinner.
The days are long, the gardens are beautiful and the atmosphere already feels very Mediterranean.
Why May works so well
Warm daytime temperatures.
Long evenings.
Comfortable outdoor ceremonies.
Beautiful natural surroundings.
Ideal for fincas, villas, hotels and countryside venues.
May is also an excellent month for couples planning a full wedding weekend with welcome drinks, activities and a post wedding celebration.
What to consider
Because May is such a desirable wedding month, popular venues and suppliers can book well in advance.
If you are considering a Saturday wedding, we recommend starting the venue search early.
Weekday weddings can sometimes offer more flexibility.
Getting Married in June
June is another fantastic month for a destination wedding on the Costa del Sol.
The days are long, evenings are warm and outdoor celebrations work beautifully.
By June, you can usually plan dinner and dancing outside well into the evening.
For international guests, it also gives the celebration a real holiday feel.
Why June is so popular
Long daylight hours.
Warm evenings.
Very good conditions for outdoor receptions.
Beautiful sunsets.
Perfect for pool parties and beach events.
June is particularly good for couples planning a three day destination wedding.
You could have rooftop welcome drinks, an outdoor wedding and a relaxed pool party or beach club celebration the following day.
What to consider
Temperatures start rising as June progresses.
For ceremonies earlier in the afternoon, shade becomes increasingly important.
If your venue has little natural shade, you may need parasols, fans or another solution for guest comfort.
Getting Married in July
July is beautiful, sunny and extremely reliable for outdoor events.
But it is also hot.
This does not mean you should avoid July.
It simply means the wedding timeline needs to be planned around the climate.
An evening ceremony can work extremely well.
For example, instead of starting your ceremony at 16:00, you might start closer to 18:00 or 19:00 depending on the venue and location.
Why July can be amazing
Very reliable sunshine.
Long, warm evenings.
Fantastic atmosphere for outdoor parties.
Perfect for coastal venues and beach clubs.
Great for guests combining the wedding with a summer holiday.
What to consider
Heat is the biggest factor.
You need to think carefully about shade, water, fans and ceremony timing.
A ceremony in direct sun during the hottest part of the afternoon will not be comfortable for your guests.
We also recommend considering older guests, young children and anyone travelling from a cooler climate.
A beautiful destination wedding should feel enjoyable, not like an endurance test.
Getting Married in August
August is traditionally one of the hottest months of the year in southern Spain.
It is also peak holiday season.
For some couples, this works perfectly.
Guests may already be planning summer holidays and the atmosphere along the Costa del Sol is lively.
For others, the heat and busy tourism season make another month more suitable.
August works best when
You want an evening wedding.
Your venue has excellent shaded areas.
You are planning a coastal celebration.
Your guests are comfortable with summer temperatures.
You want a very relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere.
What to consider
Hotels and accommodation can be more expensive because August is peak tourist season.
Popular coastal areas can also be busier.
This is something to consider if you are arranging large accommodation blocks, transfers or activities for your guests.
Timing is especially important.
We would strongly recommend avoiding an early afternoon outdoor ceremony unless the venue has exceptional shade.
Getting Married in September
September is probably one of the most popular wedding months on the Costa del Sol, and for good reason.
You still have the warmth of summer, but the most intense temperatures are beginning to ease.
The sea is warm, evenings are pleasant and outdoor weddings work beautifully.
Why September is such a strong choice
Warm weather.
Comfortable evenings.
Ideal for outdoor ceremonies.
Excellent for fincas, villas and coastal venues.
Fantastic conditions for multi day celebrations.
September gives couples the best of both worlds.
It still feels like summer, but generally without the intensity of July and August.
What to consider
It is a very popular month.
Venues and suppliers can book early, particularly Saturdays.
If September is your preferred month, securing your venue should be one of your first priorities.
Getting Married in October
October can be one of the most underrated months for weddings in Málaga.
Early October in particular can still feel beautifully warm.
The atmosphere is calmer after the busy summer season and outdoor ceremonies are still very possible.
Why we like October
Comfortable daytime temperatures.
Less intense heat.
Beautiful light for photography.
A more relaxed feel across the Costa del Sol.
Potentially better venue availability later in the month.
October works particularly well for couples who do not want a very hot wedding.
What to consider
As the month progresses, evenings become cooler and sunset gets earlier.
Rain is also slightly more possible than during the summer months.
That means your Plan B becomes more important.
It is worth choosing a venue where you genuinely like both the outdoor space and the indoor alternative.
What About Winter Weddings in Málaga?
Although the Costa del Sol is known for sunshine, winter weddings can also be beautiful.
December, January, February and March are much quieter for weddings.
This can make them attractive for couples looking for something more intimate or different.
Winter is particularly suited to:
City weddings in Málaga.
Historic hotels.
Restaurants with beautiful private rooms.
Intimate celebrations.
Lunch weddings.
Smaller destination weddings.
The daytime weather can still be pleasant, although evenings are much cooler and outdoor events are less predictable.
If your dream is dinner under the stars followed by dancing outdoors until late, winter probably is not your best choice.
But if you imagine an elegant lunch celebration, beautiful indoor setting and relaxed weekend in Málaga, winter can be very special.
What Is the Best Month for an Outdoor Wedding in Málaga?
For most couples, we would recommend:
May
June
September
Early October
These months normally offer the best balance between warm weather and guest comfort.
April can also be lovely, particularly if you prefer milder temperatures.
July and August are absolutely possible, but we recommend later ceremony times and careful planning around the heat.
What Time Should You Get Married in Spain?
This is where destination weddings can feel very different from weddings in the UK.
Spanish celebrations generally start later.
For summer weddings, this is not just cultural.
It is practical.
Starting later allows you to avoid the hottest part of the day and gives you beautiful evening light.
For example, a summer wedding might look something like this:
Ceremony at 18:00.
Cocktail at 19:00.
Dinner at 20:30 or 21:00.
Party afterwards.
In spring or autumn, you may start earlier.
The exact timing depends on the month, sunset time and venue.
We always recommend building the wedding timeline around the weather and guest experience rather than choosing a ceremony time simply because it sounds traditional.
Which Month Is Best for a Marbella Wedding?
Marbella is popular throughout the main wedding season.
May, June, September and early October work particularly well for villas, hotels and beach clubs.
July and August can also be fantastic if you are planning an evening celebration near the coast.
One advantage of Marbella is the wide choice of venues with terraces, sea views and outdoor dining spaces.
However, accommodation demand can be high during summer, so couples planning weddings in July or August should consider hotel availability early.
What About Inland Málaga and Axarquía?
The Costa del Sol is not only about the coastline.
Some of the most beautiful wedding venues are inland, surrounded by mountains, olive trees and countryside.
Areas such as Axarquía can provide incredible views and a very different atmosphere from Marbella.
However, inland temperatures can sometimes feel warmer during summer days.
Evenings can also cool more quickly during spring and autumn.
This is why location matters just as much as month.
Two venues only 45 minutes apart can have very different conditions.
Does the Month Affect the Cost of a Wedding?
Potentially, yes.
Wedding pricing is not always dramatically different by month, but demand can influence availability and venue conditions.
Peak wedding months such as May, June and September can book quickly.
Some venues may offer more flexibility for weekday weddings or dates outside peak season.
Accommodation prices can also vary significantly.
July and August are peak tourism months, which can make hotels more expensive.
For couples watching their overall wedding budget, choosing a weekday or shoulder season date can sometimes make a meaningful difference.

Think About Your Guests Too
When choosing your wedding month, do not only think about the weather.
Think about your guests.
Ask yourself:
Are many guests travelling from the UK?
Are families bringing children?
Will guests need to take time off work?
Will accommodation be affordable?
Are there older relatives who may struggle with extreme heat?
Are you planning activities before or after the wedding?
A destination wedding is an experience for everyone travelling to celebrate with you.
Choosing the right date can make that experience much easier.
